The Evolution of Storytelling

 

TikTok is just another cave to paint in. The same is true for any medium you choose to tell your story through. Where and how we tell stories always evolves, but the reasons why never change. Stories are how we share what’s important.

We ask our clients lots of questions, especially during the onboarding process. One of those questions is, “What makes your company important to your customers?” I’m always amazed by how much that question stumps people.

We ask that question because the answer is essential to great storytelling. For you to be successful at telling your story, you have to know why it matters to your audience. What makes you important makes your story worth remembering.

When you think about the history of storytelling, go all the way back to cave dwellers painting symbols on the walls and ask yourself why they did that. Our ancient ancestors were trying to share important knowledge with others. It was important that their fellow man knew of certain dangers or that they understood new ways to survive. It’s no different than how you talk about your business.

Your story is how you share what makes you important., so you need to tell it wherever your audience may see it. If they live in caves, you better get some paint. If they live on TikTok, you need to start making some short videos on your phone.

Successful storytelling isn’t about where you want to tell your story. It’s about going to where your audience is. However, you can’t just go to where your audience lives and start telling stories the same way you always have. You need to know how to tell a story in that environment.

Our team spends hours every week learning how to be better storytellers on the ever-growing list of platforms available today. It’s a lot to keep track of, but we have to do it. If we go make a cave painting on TikTok, it won’t resonate there. If we put a video in a cave, it would fall flat too. The trick to staying ahead of the curve is to always be studying where and how people are communicating. You have to evolve with your audience.

Despite needing to have varied content across dozens of channels, you don’t need a different story for each medium. To break through in this noisy world, your business needs one clear, memorable, and repeatable story that can be told in many different ways across any possible medium. Whether it’s a cave wall or TikTok, if you tell your story well, it will spread.

When your customers can easily understand what makes your company important to them, they’ll tell others. When they tell others, your business will grow.
